Search engine optimization is very important . When done correctly, it increases free traffic from search engines and brings targeted visitors . But unfortunately, web masters could unknowingly be doing something which may hurt their rankings Below is a list of a few things that you shouldn’t do.

Repeated submissions: If you are waiting to show up in Google, be patient. By repeatedly submitting your site, you may actually affect your website in a bad way when you site does show up. Also, if you automatically ping search engines when you submit new content, be sure not to over-ping. Google is not very keen on automated services and may penalize you as a result. Some sites, for example, have had their pages dropped from search engine indexes.Duplicate content: Another way to get penalized is to put the same textual content on multiple pages, or content that’s directly copied from a external site.
You could actually be duplicating content and not be aware of it. If you use a blog, for example, you could have duplicate content shown on permalink pages, archive pages and the home page. You may also have a minor duplicate issue by using inconsistent links.

Questionable links. It’s very tempting to do anything to increase traffic and get inbound links. But, not all links are equal. And, whether you are aware of it or not, linking to questionable or spam websites can do your site more harm than good and actually hurt your search engine ranking. So before you link to someone, investigate their websites properly.
